Beef & Barley

This place is one, if not, my favorite brunch spot in Chicago thus far. Beef & Barley is a gastropub in Lakeview with a killer brunch menu. They just got a new chef not too long ago and updated their menu but even before, the biscuits and gravy with a fried chicken thigh (or country fried steak) and an egg on top was mouthwatering. These are 2 separate occasions but I loved the biscuits and gravy so much, I’d always order it.

I’ve only had their brunch, so I can’t speak for their dinner and lunch menu but I can only imagine it’s nothing short of appetizing.

The bar has a an old school, 1920s vibe, but they do have TVs so if you’re wanting to watch some sports while grabbing some drinks and delicious food, this is a great spot. It isn’t very big so it’s cozy and they have outdoor seating for the summer time but it’s off a busy road so the views aren’t anything special. However, the brunch I had today definitely was.

I had the carne asada eggs benedict: english muffin halves topped with chimichurri sauce, sliced medium rare skirt steak, ancho chile hollandaise, and poached eggs with breakfast potatoes. The breakfast potatoes were well seasoned and with tasty onion bits. To die for! We all shared an order of the breakfast tots, house-made tater tots on top of beer cheese sauce and sriracha butter with fried eggs, chorizo, and sriracha sauce to top it off. These house-made tots were amazing: grated potato, seasoned and fried to perfection with a delectable, creamy cheese sauce and the crispy fried egg and bacon were just icing on this distinctive, savory cake!

I’ll definitely keep coming back to try their cheeseburger benedict. Genius idea! Just listen to the description: beef slider patty, carmelized onion, pickle, poached egg, and cheddar hollandaise atop a slider bun with breakfast potatoes. Is your mouth not watering right now?

They frequently update their tap list and have some bottled and canned beer as well. I haven’t tried their cocktails but I have had their Sunday brunch punch bowl (with friends of course) and this was yummy. I don’t remember what was in it except for fresh berries and orange slices, served in an intricate glass bowl with matching cute little glass mugs.

This pub is a real gem, check it out!
