1492 Cuban Fusion

Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Guantanamera, guajira guantanamera
Yo soy un hombre sincero
De donde crece la palma
Y antes de morir yo quiero
Echar mis versos del alma

This song was just playing in my head as I bit into my luscious cuban sandwich at the 1492 Cuban Fusion Cafe in Humboldt Park, Chicago. Just look at this thing! Perfectly toasted bread, slightly buttered with smoked ham, roasted pork, swiss cheese, pickles, mayo, and mustard (your typical ingredients for a Cuban). I also ordered a side of tostones (fried green plantain) that came with a garlic sauce.

They have a regular (6-7″) and super (10″) option for their sandwiches. I got a regular and was stuffed and very satisfied. I had to take some of my meat and cheese off (it was loaded) to finish it.

Not only do they serve typical Cuban sandwiches but also have a nice variety of Cuban fare at very reasonable prices. Their menu includes empanadas, croquetas, papas rellenas, chuletas, lechon, desserts, and coffee, among other great sounding dishes. Their batidos (milkshakes) are really good. We tried the strawberry banana shake, delicious!

I want to try the Elena Ruz sandwich next time: media noche bread (french toast style – sweet), turkey, ham, cream cheese, and strawberry jam. Seems like a Cuban Monte Cristo 🙂

If you’re in the neighborhood and looking for some good Cuban food, check this place out. The service was great (so friendly and helpful) and fairly quick. The decor is bright and colorful (clean place), and they have Latin music playing. It’s a little taste of paradise!
